BESD sees enrollment decline, continuing multi-year trend

Box Elder News Journal · Brigham City, Utah

Box Elder School District experienced an enrollment decline of just under 3% for the current school year, continuing a multi-year demographic trend across the region, according to an update delivered by BESD Superintendent Keith Mecham. While district numbers dropped, Mecham noted the contraction remains notably less severe than declines recorded by several neighboring northern Utah school systems.

District administrators attributed the continued drop largely to regional birth rate declines that began around 2020, which have gradually worked their way into kindergarten and primary school cohorts. Assistant Superintendent Heidi Jo West noted additional contributing community factors, while district leaders highlighted ongoing efforts to adjust staffing and classroom allocations proportionally.

Despite the enrollment contraction, Box Elder School District officials emphasized that proactive facility planning, diverse academic offerings, and strong teacher retention continue to ensure high-quality educational programming for students across Brigham City, Tremonton, and rural county schools.
