Box Elder County Deputy Mike Allred Receives $700,000 Settlement
The Leader (Tremonton) · Brigham City, Utah
Box Elder County Sheriff Deputy Mike Allred has received a $700,000 settlement from the Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) following a formal pre-litigation settlement agreement. The compensation resolves claims stemming from severe injuries Allred sustained during a tragic line-of-duty confrontation in Tremonton in 2025.
Allred had been dispatched to respond to an active domestic violence call in Tremonton when incoming gunfire penetrated his patrol cruiser, striking both him and his K-9 partner. The ambush tragically claimed the lives of Tremonton-Garland police officers Lee Sorensen and Eric Estrada, and left Allred with permanent shrapnel injuries across the right side of his face and shoulder.
The administrative payout was authorized through the state risk management fund following detailed legal review. Despite lasting physical injuries, Allred continued his public service in Box Elder County law enforcement and recently campaigned as the Republican nominee for county sheriff in the 2026 general election.
