Box Elder County grants agreement for geothermal infrastructure
The Leader (Tremonton) · Brigham City, Utah
The Box Elder County Commission recently approved an agreement with Rodatherm Energy Corporation, a move that paves the way for the development of geothermal energy infrastructure. This project, which aims to harness subsurface heat, will extend across an area stretching from west of Honeyville to west of Brigham City. While the agreement allows the company to use the subsurface beneath county roads, it does not function as a final permit for construction.
Rodatherm Energy Corporation intends to utilize a specialized 'waterless' geothermal technology that drills deep underground to create a closed-loop system for power generation. The company, in partnership with Fulcrum Point Holdings, envisions a phased development plan that could potentially generate up to 200 megawatts of electricity. Local officials emphasize that the company will still be required to navigate all necessary state and county land use permits to address site-specific locations and well placements.
For the Box Elder community, this project represents a significant shift toward local energy production and economic investment. While officials like Commissioner Tyler Vincent have pushed for greater transparency and plain-language explanations for residents concerned about subsurface leases, the potential for long-term growth and community resilience remains a primary focus as the companies target 2027 for the start of construction.
