Box Elder Deputy Makes New Allegation Against Outgoing Sheriff Potter; County Refutes Claim
KUTV 2News · Box Elder County, Utah
A Box Elder County sheriff's deputy has publicly leveled new allegations against outgoing Sheriff Kevin Potter following an October 27 crash in Ogden Canyon that killed a 22-year-old motorcyclist. Deputy Mike Allred, who recently ran for sheriff, alleged on social media that deputies detected the smell of alcohol on Potter's breath during an April 2025 parking lot interaction, claiming the matter was reported to county officials.
Box Elder County officials swiftly pushed back against the claims, with a county spokeswoman characterizing the allegation as unsubstantiated and emphasizing that it is not an established fact. County commissioners previously issued a public censure against Potter earlier in the year following a separate confrontation with a local rancher on private property and an erratic driving report on I-15, but officials noted no censure was ever issued regarding the alleged April 2025 incident.
The public dispute unfolds as Ogden police investigators continue their active reconstruction and fatal traffic investigation into the collision that took the life of Katie Sue Ruth Huggins, whose funeral was held on Friday. Potter has remained cooperative with investigating officers and took voluntary administrative leave, while county officials emphasize that allegations made in the aftermath of the contested election remain unverified.
