County grants property tax abatement for widow
Box Elder News Journal · Perry, Utah
The Box Elder County Commission unanimously voted to grant a property tax abatement of up to $1,412 to a Perry widow. The relief was deemed necessary after it was discovered the resident did not qualify for the state’s standard homeowner tax credit due to the inclusion of her late husband’s income in household records.
Marcie Powell of the County Auditor’s Office presented the case to the commission, highlighting the financial hardship faced by the taxpayer. The approval provides immediate financial assistance to the homeowner, alleviating the burden that would have otherwise fallen on her under state guidelines.
This act of leniency demonstrates the commission's commitment to supporting elderly residents and those dealing with the loss of a spouse. The decision ensures that local residents facing unique financial circumstances are not unfairly penalized by rigid state tax credit structures.
