Danger warning issued for toxins at Mantua Reservoir
KVNU Talk · Mantua, Utah
Public health officials have issued a high-level danger warning for Mantua Reservoir following the detection of a harmful algal bloom. The Bear River Health Department advises the public that the water contains dangerous toxins, necessitating immediate restrictions on all water-based recreational activities to ensure community safety.
Under the current mandate, residents are strictly prohibited from drinking, swimming, wading, or engaging in activities like water skiing and paddling at the reservoir. Additionally, pet owners are cautioned that toxic algae exposure can be fatal to dogs, meaning pets must be kept entirely away from the water. Boating is also restricted in any areas where visible algae is present.
While fishing is still permitted, the health department has issued specific safety protocols for anglers, requiring that the skin and internal organs of all fish caught in the reservoir be discarded before consumption. Health officials continue to monitor the water quality and will provide updates on when the danger warning will be lifted.
