Perry Officer Receives Medal of Valor for Life-Saving Actions
Box Elder News Journal · Brigham City, Utah
In recognition of his heroic and life-saving efforts during a highly volatile incident last year, Perry Police Detective Zachary Waddoups has been awarded the department’s prestigious Medal of Valor. The award was presented during a ceremony where department leadership and community members gathered to honor his exceptional service and bravery in the line of duty.
The recognition stems from an incident on November 7, 2025, which officials described as a "chaotic family disturbance." Detective Waddoups responded to the scene, navigating a dangerous and rapidly evolving situation. His decisive actions during the disturbance were credited with saving lives and successfully de-escalating a potentially fatal conflict.
During the presentation, Perry Police Chief Scott Hancey read the department's official Medal of Valor policy to those in attendance. Chief Hancey noted that the medal is reserved for officers who distinguish themselves through acts of extraordinary bravery or outstanding performance under hazardous conditions. Chief Hancey commended Waddoups for exemplifying the highest standards of the Perry Police Department.
The Medal of Valor is one of the highest honors a law enforcement officer can receive, underscoring the daily risks faced by local police. The Perry community expressed deep gratitude for Detective Waddoups’ dedication to public safety and his willingness to put himself in harm’s way to protect the residents of Box Elder County.
