Tremonton Fire Department Welcomes Therapy Dog Rosie to Support First Responder Mental Health
Gephardt Daily · Tremonton, Utah
The Tremonton Fire Department has officially welcomed its newest and furriest recruit: Rosie, a 5-month-old sheepadoodle who has joined the ranks to bolster mental health and emotional well-being for local emergency personnel.
### A Proactive Approach to First Responder Wellness
Recognizing that firefighters and paramedics regularly confront high-stress, traumatic, and critical incidents across the northern valley, the Tremonton Fire Department—working in close partnership with the neighboring Garland Fire Department—is pioneering proactive wellness initiatives for emergency responders.
"While we spend countless hours training to protect our communities, it's just as important that we take care of the people behind the badge," the department shared in an announcement. "Rosie will be another resource in our ongoing efforts to promote a healthy, supportive environment for our crews."
### Station Life & Handler Partnership
Rosie, a cross between an Old English sheepdog and a standard poodle, is paired with handler Captain McBride. The duo has commenced specialized therapy training, familiarizing Rosie with emergency apparatus noise, station routines, and crew debriefings. While she is not intended to replace professional mental health resources, therapy dogs have been clinically shown to reduce cortisol levels, ease anxiety, and provide comforting non-judgmental presence following harrowing emergency dispatch calls.
Department leadership noted that Rosie has already had an immediate uplifting impact around the firehouse: "We have high hopes for her future, even if her current qualifications include being adorable, accepting belly rubs, and occasionally stealing the spotlight. Rosie, just remember: Around here, we chase fires, not squirrels!"
Fire officials plan to introduce Rosie to the wider Bear River Valley community during upcoming civic visits, school fire prevention tours, and public safety demonstrations.
