UPDATE: Lightning-caused wildfire threatens structures in Box Elder County
KVNU Talk · Box Elder County, Utah
The Rocky Pass Fire, confirmed to be caused by lightning, continues to burn in the western portion of Box Elder County. As of Monday, July 20, 2026, the blaze has consumed approximately 81 acres of Bureau of Land Management land and is currently at 15% containment. Suppression efforts involving local, state, and federal agencies are ongoing, utilizing both ground crews and aviation assets to limit the spread.
Authorities have reported that no structures are currently under threat and no roads have been closed. However, officials have issued a firm directive for the public to avoid the incident area, which includes Emigrant Trail, Devil’s Playground, and Rocky Pass Road. Civilian traffic is cited as a significant safety hazard that could impede emergency response operations, and private drones are strictly prohibited as they threaten to ground firefighting aircraft.
To ensure public safety, Stage 2 fire restrictions remain in effect for all unincorporated areas of Box Elder County and BLM-managed lands, banning all open fires and fireworks. Officials have explicitly requested that the public refrain from bringing donations to the fire lines, as they are not currently needed. Residents are encouraged to monitor official social media channels for updates as firefighters work to protect regional natural resources.
