Sun Tunnels
Sun Tunnels · Grouse Creek, Utah
Sun Tunnels is a world-renowned Land Art installation created by artist Nancy Holt in 1976. Located in the remote Great Basin Desert of western Box Elder County, the installation consists of four massive concrete tunnels arranged in an open "X" configuration. The tunnels are precisely aligned to frame the sun as it rises and sets during the summer and winter solstices, creating a spectacular celestial play of light and shadow.
Each tunnel measures nine feet in diameter and is perforated with small holes of varying sizes, which correspond to the stars of four constellations: Draco, Perseus, Columba, and Capricorn. During the day, sunlight shines through these holes, projecting glowing star patterns onto the dark interiors of the tunnels, turning them into micro-planetariums.
The site offers an incredibly peaceful and meditative experience in one of Utah's most isolated desert valleys. It is a favored spot for photographers, astrophotographers, and travelers looking to experience the vastness of the Utah desert paired with a monumental artistic achievement.
